Repurposing Pumpkins For Christmas.

Let’s get something straight. I am super cheap. This sometimes becomes a problem when it comes to decorating for the holidays, because I totally love doing that.

We normally don’t carve pumpkins for halloween, mostly because I normally get bored half way through and then they rot REALLY fast after. Also, this makes it so that I don’t have to buy more decorations for Fall/Thanksgiving. You just throw a hay bale from the feed store in there and voila!

Anyways, last year I felt so bad about throwing them out after Thanksgiving because they were still good. This year I had an idea!

I spray painted them christmas colors so we could keep them longer!

I plan on buying some live garland and putting a big red bow on the hay bale to make it more christmassy.

But I love the way it turned out! The red spray paint we already had, we bought the .97 cent white primer paint from home depot along with the metallic-y one, and then the glitter spray paint came in a bonus pack thing.

It was totally inexpensive and fun. It took a little more time to do than I had planned (the metallic paint took forever to dry) but other than that, it was fun! AND my pumpkins lasted for 3 holidays!

Happy Wednesday!

Tradition.

This weekend was totally crazy.. We were virtually NEVER home. I am definitely ready to spend the day tomorrow doing absolutely nothing with Cody. Hopefully our house won’t smell of fire and smoke tomorrow. Oh yea, we Cody  is super awesome and closed the flue to the fireplace when apparently the fire was not completely out all the way and then left for 6 hours….I guess in his defense he did check to make sure it was cold and he isn’t really used to having a fireplace, and a wood burning stove isn’t really the same thing. NEVERCLOSINGTHEFLUEAGAIN. Thankfully we took Ellie to my mom’s and she wasn’t in her kennel during this smoking disaster. God, that would have been awful. I don’t wanna think about it.

This was our (me and Cody) third Christmas together, and since we have come into each other’s lives, our Christmas holidays have been a little more extreme. This year we spent Christmas Eve day at his family’s house about an hour away, after that we rushed over to my mom’s house for dinner, and then after that we went over to our friend’s house to eat cookies and watch a Home Alone marathon (did you know there are 4 of those?!?), and then finally we were able to go home and sleep at 2am. PS. This is the first year I have not slept at my mommy’s (yes, mommy) house the night before christmas. I have ALWAYS woken up to presents under the tree that Santa had brought while I was sleeping. Don’t judge me. I’m not sorry. It was awesome. On Christmas morning, we were woken up by Ellie barking because my mom got here at 845am and we got to open presents. Then, we went over to my dad’s house to open presents there, AND THEN for dinner, we drove up to Cody’s parents’ house for dinner. Ay Yi Yi. I am happy it is over but I am so thankful that we are able to be able to do all that and spend time with everyone for Christmas.

So that brings me to the point of all this. Family traditions. I was thinking about all that we do and realizing how wonderful it is to have our special traditions. And since being part of cody’s life and vice versa, the new traditions that we have been introduced to.

Here are the ones we celebrated this year:

1. At Cody’s family’s house, everyone gets together. There are about 24 of us there (I have no clue most of their names or how they are related [but to be fair, neither does cody]) and we do a huge white elephant exchange. It is so much fun and everyone is so welcoming and loving and it happens every year.

2. Eating Christmas dinner with my momma. Its nothing fancy and if I wanted to I could wear sweats, but I love it. I love being able to spend that time with her.

3. Opening our stockings first on Christmas morning. EVERY YEAR.

4. Packing up all the gifts for my dad, sister, and step mom and lugging them over to their house where we try to open them before everyone else arrives (that never happens).

5. Bagels (that my dad drives to davis for when we live in sacramento and I am SOOO thankful he does), cream cheese, and lox (from Costco, of course) with about 13 other friends and family at my dad’s house on Christmas morning.

6. At Cody’s house, I have been lucky enough to be integrated into the tradition of using the empty wrapping paper tubes as swords and having a sword fight with Cody and his mom and dad. It is AMAZING. Seriously so much fun.

IMG_20121225_220103This is the aftermath….DESTROYED.

I am so grateful for all the traditions that we celebrate. I love that we are going to be able to do these thing in some way or another for a really long time and one day hope to pass on to my kids. I do want to start one more tradition in my house (and Cody agrees), I want to start the pajama tradition. Where you get a new pair of pajamas every year and that is the one present you open on Christmas Eve.

What traditions do you do? Any new ones you want to start?

***UPDATE***
Is it possible to have a holiday hangover? Because I totally have one of those today.

Happy christmas

Happy Christmas everyone! I hope you are enjoying the family and friends and coziness today!

I can’t wait to hear about your holiday! And if you don’t celebrate christmas, then happy Tuesday!

Christmas Carols

This is what my view looks like at the moment…IMAG0433
Yea. I am procrastinating. So what?
WAHHHH I DON’T WANNA FOLD THEM!
Seriously. Half of these have been sitting on the dresser for the past week and the other half were sitting in the hamper while the dirty clothes sat on the floor where the hamper was supposed to be…I hate folding clothes. UGH. And cody doesn’t fold my clothes right.
So instead of doing laundry I am going to tell you all about Christmas caroling. Cool, right!?
Every year my aunt and uncle host a Christmas party. They have been doing it for almost 30 years now. First we go Christmas caroling at a few convalescent homes in the area and then we go back to their house for the party! It is tradition to make a special soup that I have no idea what the recipe is (I should though, I help make it every year). And to have an ornament exchange. Here are a few not so great photos of caroling….we were too focused on the singing to pay much attention to photos.
webP1060153
At the first place, we walk through the hallways and sing to everyone in their rooms.
webP1060154Everyone gets a book, cuz lets be real. Most of us can’t sing all the real words to most Christmas songs. We also get bells to shake along with the songs.
Like I said, my aunt has been doing this for quite some time…
webP1060167At the second place, we sit on the stairs and whoever wants to listen can come into the lobby. We had quite the crowd….haha
webP1060170
As we got into it, more people came to watch. It is fun watching the residents sing along too. They all seem so happy 🙂
webP1060172This guy was a war veteran. After we had finished, he thanked us, told us the story of Christmas, and went on to sing us God Bless America. Not quite a Christmas song but an always welcome tune. He was cute.
I don’t have any photos of the party. I was too busy enjoying it. Sorryimnotsorry. I do have a photo of what I got in my ornament exchange though!
IMG_20121216_222031errr…..salt and pepper shakers….? Hahaha I don’t think they fully understood the concept of ornament exchange…lol
They did come wrapped in a pretty scarf though.
webIMG_9410
And then I realized it was a free scarf from ford…haha oh well, I am still totally gonna rock it. I think its pretty still.
webIMG_9417
I realize that this post isn’t very funny and/or witty. Sometimes I’m a terrible writer and apparently that day was today. Deal with it. Hopefully tomorrow will be better…
stillbeingmolly
So this is the first time I am linking up for #YOLO Mondays. I am slightly having a hard time with the name though. Mostly because over here where I live, the next county over, is Yolo county. So every time someone says YOLO I think of the area, not “you only live once” (and I had no idea for the longest time what YOLO meant) and when kids say it here I silently tell them that they are dumb. But I don’t think link ups are dumb nor do I think that Molly and Carly are dumb so I am gonna check it out! And so should you.

I May Have Gone A Little Overboard With This List.

Obviously, it is almost Christmas and everyone is in a mad rush to get their shopping done. Or you are like me and try not to really get too stressed out about the holidays…I am not sure if that was a lie or not. Either way, you are probably looking for gifts for someone. I love looking at other people’s gift guide suggestions but a lot of times, I realize that I would never in a million years purchase anything on their list nor would I know what to do with it if I got something on it. SO I created a list of items that are all $100 and under that I think are awesome. And slightly random. And hopefully there will be something on that list that will help you at least get an idea of what you want to get.

Many of these items I have bought (I will mark them with an * just in case you have any questions about them) or something Cody and I have decided would be a cool gift. I tried to make this list all inclusive. Something for everyone, ya know? From those of you, who are like me, and want to get the most out of your money or for  those of you that are big spenders! Anyways, if you don’t like anything, too bad. I had fun making this. 🙂

2. *Random Acts Of Kindness Kit $10-$15 from Uncommon Goods. This comes in an original, teen, and family version.
3. Man Candles $15 from Uncommon Goods

5. *Geyser tube $5 on Amazon (Seriously. These are amazing. My WHOLE family loves this thing! Everyone!)

under 251. *Scratch Map $24 from Uncommon Goods. This think is super cool. I got this for my dad for Father’s Day this year and he thought it was the coolest thing! He travels all over for work so now he can scratch off where he has been!

7. *Jewelry Holder $45 from TomsEarringHolders on Etsy. I have this. It is BEAUTIFUL. It holds all (minus my Premier Designs jewelry) my earrings and the back has space for necklaces and bracelets. It is perfect and it looks really elegant.
8. Naked 2 Palette $50 from Sephora. I am obsessing over it. I want it SOBAD!
9. *Headband $38 from ThreeBirdNest on Etsy. I don’t have this exact one (but I totally am crushing on it) but I do have another headband from her. They are super cute and warm and really well made. I am pretty sure she makes her stuff by hand too.

under 751. Beer Kit $70 from MrBeer.
2. Ski Wine Rack $58 from Uncommon Goods

under 1001. Women’s Ansley $100 from Ugg. How cute are these! And they come in a million different colors!
2. *Sony BDP-S590 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi $98 on Amazon. we have 2 of these. They have a wifi adapter thing inside already so you don’t need to buy an extra one and it works really well. We have an LG one and it sucks.
3. Customizable Switchblade $80 from Quirky

There is my list. I hope it wasn’t too overwhelming. I feel the need to point out that this was all my own opinion. The companies have no idea I am writing about them. Just FYI.

I hope this helps give you some ideas. I tried to include items for everyone. Let me know if you have any questions. Like I said before, the ones with * I have purchased in the past. Good luck with your holiday shopping!

What are you getting for your friends and family this year? Anything on my list catch your eye? Did I miss anything?

Apparently I don’t know my days of the week.

I spent yesterday doing Christmasy things and being on hold with Shutterfly….The whole time I thought it was Saturday! Nope! Definitely not. It was totally Sunday. At least it wasn’t too late when I figured it out and could still bust out a somewhat semi coherent blog post!

This weekend we got our christmas tree! We go to a place called Davis Ranch, where you can cut your own tree down. Totally fun. We have learned our lesson from previous years to bring an electric saw…Unfortunately we decided it would be a FANTASTIC idea to bring Ellie along, so there were ZERO photos taken of our tree chopping. We were also there with my BFF and her husband and their dog…There was a lot going on. Pictures were not at the top of our list.

BUT here is what it looks like after all of our hard work!

IMG_20121202_201750I love that almost all the ornaments are unique ones. We bought a box of ornaments from Target thinking that we weren’t going to have enough but we didn’t use any! We are just going to return it and get our money back. Dolla Dolla Bills Ya’ll.

IMG_20121202_201847My mom came over and brought us a bunch of ornaments from my life. She isn’t wanting to do big trees anymore (especially now that I moved out) but she still wanted the ornaments that mean something to get used.

Also, Apparently, I used to collect snow globes without even realizing it. My mom brought me 4 to put around the house.

I was super crafty today, not only did I make Crock-Pot Butternut Squash Soup, I made/ordered our Christmas cards! I can’t wait for them to come in and really see what they look like. I will say this, Ellie is not the easiest to take pictures with…all of our pictures turned out like this…

IMG_9078

IMG_9079Like I said. Ellie takes awesome photos when we need her to…NOT.

Somehow, we thankfully ended up with a good photo!

IMG_8980 1YAAY! This process took FOREVER! And Shutterfly’s sale was ending that night! IT.HAD.TO.WORK!

Well after all this effort of decorating the tree and getting a good photo, Shutterfly’s website crashed for like a zillion hours and it was just a complete mess. BUT they fixed it and we got everything ordered! Free shipping and 40% off our order! I was thrilled! And so was Cody about the price.

It has been an amazing weekend listening to the rain, and Christmas music and starting a fire for the first time since we bought the house. I’m not gonna lie, there is something totally magical about December.

I hope you had a splendid weekend!
What did you do?

Christmas.

Ok people. There is something very important we need to talk about…

It is not Christmas yet!!!

I am hosting my first Thanksgiving this year. Stop stressing me out with all your Christmas decorations and let me have this holiday!

I already feel behind on it all. I am not even thinking about trees yet! AHH!

Seriously though, did y’all forget about Thanksgiving???

Get it together!

Oh and just in case you are wondering…Go here.

Ok. Rant done. My eyes are burning from the onions I was cooking. So I am gonna go cry until it doesn’t hurt anymore.
